A full MAN D2866E overhaul, delivered on budget

When an international ship-management company needed a complete spare-parts package to overhaul a MAN D2866E auxiliary engine, we costed it two ways - all MAN Genuine, and a budget-optimised Genuine + Analogues mix - and let the client choose the balance of cost and pedigree. They chose the mix.

A complete overhaul kit, within budget

A managed motor vessel was due a major overhaul of one of its MAN D2866E auxiliary engines. The ship manager came to us with the full overhaul scope and a clear constraint: keep the engine reliable, but bring the parts bill within budget.

The D2866E is a mature engine. Several parts carry superseded numbers, and a few are no longer produced - so every line had to be identified and matched against current MAN references before anything could be quoted accurately.

One itemised list, quoted two ways

We built a complete, itemised parts list - 102 line items across 15 engine systems, from the crankcase, crankshaft and cylinder head through the valve mechanism, oil and cooling circuits and the full fuel system. Every part was cross-referenced against current and superseded MAN numbers, with replacements noted where the original had changed.

We then quoted the same list two ways: one entirely MAN Genuine, and one as a Genuine + Analogues mix - with a quality OEM or aftermarket equivalent offered on every line where a sound one exists. That gave the client a like-for-like choice on cost versus pedigree, line by line.

MAN Genuine

Boxed parts supplied through MAN's own channel - full pedigree, traceability and manufacturer warranty.

OEM

Made by the same component manufacturers that supply MAN, to the same specification - without the box and the markup.

Aftermarket

Quality equivalents from established makers, used on suitable wear and ancillary items where they make sense.

Genuine where it matters, savings where it doesn't

The client chose the mix - and the point of the mix is judgement, not just price. We kept the critical, high-load and high-value components - pistons, the timing-cover assembly, precision fuel-system parts and key seals - MAN Genuine, and offered quality OEM and aftermarket equivalents only on suitable wear and ancillary items.

And the analogues are anything but generic: every OEM and aftermarket part came from a top German manufacturer - names like Mahle, Kolbenschmidt and Elring, the firms that produce the original equipment fitted to these engines.

Kept MAN Genuine

  • Pistons
  • Timing-cover assembly
  • Precision fuel-system parts - ball joints, hollow screws
  • Key O-seals and fasteners

Quality analogues (OEM / aftermarket)

  • Cylinder liners
  • Oil and water pumps, oil cooler
  • Inlet / exhaust valves, guides and tappets
  • Gaskets, seals, hoses and fittings

On budget, without compromising the rebuild

The Genuine + Analogues package came in at €18,101 against €35,238 for the all-genuine offer - about 49% lower, a saving of roughly €17,100 - without touching the parts that keep the engine alive.

Because the OEM and aftermarket lines ship from stock, many were available in about two days, against 8–10 days for boxed genuine parts - so the mix helped the schedule as well as the budget. The client got one clear, itemised package, full control over the cost-versus-pedigree trade-off on every line, and the confidence that the critical parts were genuine.
