What a raw water pump does, and when to replace it
The raw water pump, also called the sea water pump, draws seawater into the engine's cooling system and pushes it through the heat exchanger, carrying engine heat away before the water is discharged overboard. It is engine-driven and fitted with a flexible rubber impeller.
That impeller is a wear item. Over time the vanes harden, crack and can shed, and a failed impeller restricts cooling flow and leads to rapid overheating, one of the most common causes of avoidable engine damage. Because of that, it's one of the most important spares to keep aboard.
Signs it's time to inspect or replace:
- Reduced or weak water flow from the exhaust outlet
- Rising coolant or exhaust temperatures
- Visible cracking, hardening or missing vanes on the impeller
- Age. Most makers advise replacement on a regular service interval rather than on failure
