About marine impellers
A flexible impeller sits inside the raw water (sea water) pump and is the part that actually moves cooling water through the engine. Its rubber vanes flex as the shaft turns, drawing seawater in and pushing it on to the heat exchanger.
Because it runs against the pump housing and must never run dry, the impeller is a wear item: the vanes harden, crack and can shed over time. A failed impeller cuts cooling flow and is one of the most common causes of avoidable overheating, so it is the spare most operators keep aboard and change on a regular schedule rather than on failure.
