MAN turbochargers for D-Series marine diesels

The turbocharger is what gives a MAN marine diesel much of its power and efficiency, working in one of the hardest environments on the engine. Find the correct genuine MAN turbocharger for your D-Series engine below, or send us your model and serial number and we'll confirm the exact part.

Which turbocharger fits which MAN engine

Genuine MAN marine turbochargers by engine model and weight. Some engines take left- and right-bank or rating-specific units, so always confirm against your engine model and serial number. Don't see your engine? Send us the details and we'll match it.

What a turbocharger does, and how to look after it

A turbocharger uses the engine's own exhaust gas to drive a turbine wheel, which spins a compressor wheel on the same shaft and forces more air into the cylinders. More air lets more fuel burn cleanly, so the engine makes more power and runs more efficiently than it could naturally aspirated. The MAN marine units listed here are water-cooled and run at very high shaft speeds and exhaust temperatures.

Because the rotor spins on a thin film of oil at tens of thousands of rpm, turbocharger life depends almost entirely on clean oil and clean air. The great majority of failures trace back to oil starvation, contaminated oil, or debris drawn into the compressor or turbine, not to the unit simply wearing out. There is no flexible-impeller-style consumable, so turbochargers are serviced on condition rather than on a fixed replacement interval.

Sensible turbocharger maintenance:

  • Keep to the engine's oil and filter service intervals and use the specified oil grade, the turbo is lubricated from the engine's own oil supply
  • Service air filters regularly; ingested dust or a collapsed filter quickly damages the compressor wheel
  • Idle for a minute or two before shutting down after hard running, so the bearings stay oiled while the turbo spins down and sheds heat
  • At each major engine service, check for shaft play, oil leaks at either end, and blue smoke or loss of boost, the early signs of bearing or seal wear
  • Plan an overhaul or exchange unit at high running hours rather than waiting for a failure, which can send debris through the engine

Turbocharger questions

How do I find the right MAN turbocharger for my engine?+
Match your engine model in the fitment table above, or send us the model and serial number from your engine's data plate. We confirm the correct turbocharger before anything ships, including left- and right-bank or rating variants.
What is the part number for a MAN turbocharger?+
MAN marine turbocharger numbers follow the format 51.09100-XXXX or 51.09101-XXXX, for example 51.09100-7216. Verify the number against your engine model and serial number, as bank-side and rating variants exist within a series.
How often should a marine turbocharger be serviced?+
There's no impeller-style wear part, so these are serviced on condition. Inspect the turbocharger at each major engine service for shaft play, oil leaks and exhaust leaks, and plan a bearing/seal overhaul or an exchange unit at high running hours, or sooner if you notice play, blue smoke or loss of boost.
Do you supply reconditioned or exchange turbochargers?+
Yes. Many MAN turbochargers are available as reconditioned exchange units, which can cut both cost and downtime. Send us your old unit as the core.
Do you ship internationally?+
We do. In-stock turbochargers are typically dispatched the same day and sent tracked, across the UK and worldwide.

Tell us your engine. We'll find the turbo.

Send the MAN model and serial number, or a part number, and we'll confirm the right turbocharger fast.
