MAN long engine blocks for D-Series diesels

When the bottom end of an engine is beyond economic repair, a complete long block is the fastest route back to work, an assembled crankcase with crankshaft, pistons and cylinder heads, built to factory tolerances. Find the correct genuine MAN long block for your engine family below, or send us your model and serial number and we'll confirm the exact part.

Long engine blocks by engine family

Genuine MAN long blocks (81.00501 series) grouped by engine family, with unit weight and dimensions for lifting and freight planning. All are available for ordering with a typical lead time of one week. Power-rating and application variants exist within each family, so always confirm against the model and serial number on your engine's data plate. Don't see your engine? Send us the details and we'll match it.

Replacing a long engine block: when it makes sense and how to get it right

A long block is the assembled core of the engine: the crankcase with crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, camshaft and fitted cylinder heads, built and torqued to factory tolerances. It sits between a bare short block and a complete engine: your existing ancillaries such as the turbocharger, injection equipment, coolers, pumps, flywheel and electrics carry over from the old engine. The exact scope of supply can vary between part numbers, so confirm what is included when you order.

A long block is usually the right call when the bottom end is beyond economic repair, a spun bearing, crankshaft or crankcase damage, liner cavitation, or overheating and seizure. Once machining, parts and labour for a full overhaul start to approach the cost of an assembled unit, the long block wins on both money and time: instead of weeks of stripping, measuring and machining, the vessel gets a factory-spec core with one planned installation.

Getting the right block matters more here than with almost any other part. Within one engine family there are separate blocks for different power ratings, emissions stages and applications, you can see the >200 kW and rating-range variants in the tables above. Two blocks can look identical and not be interchangeable. Always send us the full model designation and serial number from your engine's data plate, and we'll confirm the correct part number before anything is ordered.

Our recommendations for a long block swap:

  • Inspect every ancillary before transferring it. A failed bottom end can send debris through the oil circuit, so check the turbocharger, oil cooler and injection equipment rather than bolting a hidden problem onto a new engine
  • Renew the cheap wear items while the engine is out: raw water pump impeller, coolant, hoses, belts and engine mounts cost little now and a haul-out later
  • Have the heat exchanger tube stack cleaned and pressure-tested before it goes onto the new block, cooling problems are the fastest way to shorten its life
  • Use new gaskets, seals and critical fasteners on every transferred component; never reuse stretch bolts
  • Follow the running-in procedure and change the oil and filters early, the first hours decide how the new bores and bearings bed in

Every block in the tables lists its weight and dimensions, so you can plan crane capacity, engine room access and freight in advance. Units are supplied crated and can be dispatched worldwide; the typical lead time is one week from order.

Tell us your engine. We'll find the block.

Send the MAN model and serial number from the data plate, or a part number, and we'll confirm the right long block fast.
