About this pump
The raw water pump, also called the sea water pump, draws seawater into the engine's cooling circuit and pushes it through the heat exchanger. It is belt or gear driven from the engine, and inside it sits a flexible rubber impeller that does the actual pumping.
That impeller is the wear part. Its vanes harden, crack and eventually shed, and a failed impeller restricts cooling flow, which is one of the most common causes of avoidable overheating.
