MAN marine camshafts
The camshaft times everything the engine does, the valves and, on many MAN D-Series units, the injection as well. We supply genuine MAN camshafts for D-Series marine diesels, with and without injection timer, matched to your exact engine.
Camshafts and injection-timer variants
Genuine MAN camshafts with the engines they fit. Many references exist in both with- and without-injection-timer forms, so confirm the exact variant against the model and serial number on your engine’s data plate.

Camshafts: what to check and when to replace
The camshaft sets the timing of everything the engine does. Its lobes are ground to a precise profile that opens and closes each valve at exactly the right moment, and on many MAN D-Series units the same shaft drives the injection timing as well. Every bit of lift and duration the engine was designed around is cut into that steel, so when a lobe wears, the valve or pump element it controls stops doing its full job.
MAN built these camshafts in two broad forms: with an injection timer and without. The correct one depends on how your engine meters fuel, so that distinction matters as much as the engine model does; the wrong variant either will not time correctly or will not physically mount. That is why we confirm the exact reference against your data plate before anything ships.
Worn lobes and followers show up as lost power, uneven running, a tick or tap from the top of the engine, and harder starting. Because the camshaft lives in the oil galleries at the heart of the engine, its condition is a fair proxy for the engine’s history: a badly worn cam usually means the oil, or the oil-change intervals, were not what they should have been. The usual causes are oil starvation, contaminated or over-extended oil, and simple high hours, and a failing follower can wipe a lobe quickly once the hardened surface is breached.
Our recommendations for camshaft work:
- Renew the followers or tappets, and any worn bearings, at the same time. A new cam running on worn followers will not last
- Confirm the with / without injection-timer variant against the model and serial number on your engine’s data plate before ordering
- Fit new oil seals and gaskets, and prime the oil system before the first start so the cam is never run dry
- Change the oil and filters, and establish why the old cam wore, otherwise the new one goes the same way
- Reset valve clearances and check injection timing after fitting, to the MAN figures for your rating
We supply genuine MAN camshafts with a 2-year warranty and worldwide dispatch, most from stock. Send us your engine model and serial number, or a photo of the data plate, and we will confirm the correct camshaft for your engine before anything is ordered.
